Comments: This city, often called simply Bahia, is located in eastern Brazil on the Atlantic Ocean. It was founded in 1530, thirty years after the Portuguese first claimed Brazil for the king of Portugal. In 1549, Bahia became the first capital of Brazil. After the colonial period the city lost its influence to other Brazilian cities like Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Brasília. In place of political and economic power, Bahia is known as the center of Afro-Brazilian culture (a fusion of African, European, and Indian cultures).
