Comment: In 2007, the population in the metropolitan region of Bahia was 3,435,000. This population is distributed roughly thus: 1,900,000 million mulattos (55%; Portuguese: pardo); 1,000,000 black (29%), 500,000 white (16%), 35,000 Asian and Amerindian (1%). Demographers conclude, therefore, that most of the population of Bahia is descended from black African Yoruba slaves from Nigeria, Ghana, Togo, and Benin.
