Comments: Antigua, Guatemala, is a now a small colonial city (current population: 35,000) surrounded by mountains and sitting in the shadow of three volcanoes: Agua (3766 m), Fuego (3763 m), and Acatenango (3976 m). Spanish conquistadors founded Antigua in 1543 as la muy Noble y muy Leal Ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros de Goathemala, and they made it this colony's capital. For the next two centuries Antigua was one of the economic and political power centers of Spain's empire in the Western Hemisphere. This prosperous city was destroyed, however, in a massive earthquake in 1773. After this disaster, the capital was moved to Guatemala City. A half century later, the city began to be reconstructed and it was renamed La Antigua Guatemala. In 1979, it was named a World Heritage city by UNESCO.
