Introduction: This series of images focuses on the "Latin American" city of San Agustín / St. Augustine. Obviously, St. Augustine is an American city on Florida's north Atlantic Coast, which is known as the "First Coast." First what? Well, first European-settled city, and, for 235 years, a Spanish-American city (1565-1763; 1784-1821). This beautiful city and current tourist attraction by 2015 has been an "English-speaking" city for 209 years. In other words, in terms of length of time alone, and in terms of origins, St. Augustine is the closest "Latin American" city to Santa Fe College in Alachua County (Santa Fe > Spanish: "holy faith;" Alachua > Spanish: Rancho La Chua; Chua > Timucuan).
Humanities theme: synchretism; diversity; multiculturalism (Native Americans, Spanish, other mediterranean peoples including Minorcans; Africans; Afro-Americans; European Americans, etc.); architecture; military arts.
Note: The photographs in this series are all by WTL©. They were chosen for both academic and æsthetic reasons among hundreds of photos he has taken in San Agustín. There is no possibility that such an academic-photographic essay can be complete. Alas!
