Image: View from the sky of the Castillo de San Marcos (Castle of St. Mark, in English; however, before it became a national monument it was called Fort Marion). Note that this castillo/castle is not a castle at all, but rather it is a military fortress built between 1672 and 1695.
Comment and Humanities Question: This is perhaps the principal emblematic image of St. Augustine and all of Florida's colonial Spanish heritage. (A) What do you think about it? (B) Compare and contrast this "Castillo" with the one in Havana, Cuba: => Castillo del Morro.
Additional: For details about this fort's construction and history, see: => San Agustín #1a, #1b, and #1c.
