Comments: This grand college building was originally Henry Flagler's Ponce de León Hotel (1888). Flagler College (1968) is now a coed private liberal arts college. Henry Flagler (1830 - 1913) was a real estate tycoon, railroad developer (Florida East Coast Railway), and partner in Standard Oil. He is known as the "father of Miami, Florida." Incidentally, he funded the second tower on the Cathedral.
Questions: (A) Why did Flagler choose this Spanish Moorish architectural style for his hotel? (B) Why did he name it after Ponce de León?
Latin American humanities: Spanish-Moorish architectural style favored by many Gilded Age tycoons.
