Source: This multi-faceted map is taken from a page in the sister-cities book: St. Augustine, Florida; San Agustín, Florida; Avilés, Spain; Avilés, España. Avilés, Spain: 2001, n.p (Copyright © 2001, Foto Angelín, S.C.).
Comments: Here we see the location of Avilés in the Spain's Comunidad Autónoma de Asturias, the region on the north coast of Spain from which Spain's royal heir apparent is named; i.e., the Príncipe de Asturias, which title paralles England's Prince of Wales. From his birth in 1968 until 2014 Spain's Príncipe de Asturias was Felipe de Borbón, the son of king Juan Carlos I. Felipe was crowned as king Felipe VI in 2014, and now Leonor (b. 2005), the eldest daughter of Felipe and his wife, queen Letizia, is the heir apparent or Princesa de Asturias.
The reason why Avilés is St. Augustine's sister city is because this is the Spanish city that Pedro Menéndez came from: Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Avilés is a beautiful city on the north side of the Picos de Europa mountains on the Cantabrian Sea. The city is somewhat inland, as it is on a river estuary, the Río de Avilés. The population of Avilés in 2015 was about 84,000. For a virtual tour of Avilés, Asturias, Spain, see: => Avilés.
