Images: This series of 18 images is a photo-journalist-professor's attempt to illustrate the sequence of events that occurred in St. Augustine, Florida, on September 8, 2015, during the enactment ceremonies of the original landing by Pedro Menéndez de Avilés on the site of the Catholic Nombre de Dios Mission. The series starts with natural context without people of the shallow natural bay off Matanzas Inlet just north of downtown St. Augustine. It continues with the arrival, landing, procession to a viewing stand filled with Catholic dignitaries, and prominade down Avenida Menéndez to the Plaza de la Constitución and the entrance into the Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine, where mass was celebrated. The series concludes with a visit to a replica of the Spanish galleon on which Menéndez arrived in St. Augustine.
Humanities Questions: (1) After reviewing the whole series of image, choose one image that stands out most to you and explain what strikes you most in the image you chose. (2) In what way--if, indeed, in any way at all--is the series of images of this particular historical reenactment a notable reflection of Latin American humanities?
