Menéndez and His Galleon (1)

Landing site

Sources: Photo on site by WTL© on September 8, 2015, on the 450 anniversary of the Spanish colonizer's founding of St. Augustine, Florida.
Image: This photo depicts the place where Menéndez de Avilés most likely landed in St. Augustine in 1565. The photo is taken from the site of the Nombre de Dios (Catholic) mission, which is where, it is supposed the first mass was said on the Catholic feast day of St. Mary. Across this inlet to the right is the property of the current Fountain of Youth, which is a tourist attraction and an active archeological site that has found (and displays) Spanish artifacts from the 16th century and evidence of a Timucuan village and burial ground. Behind the trees on the left is a Catholic cemetery and the shrine dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Leche (Our Lady of La Leche, "la leche" meaning milk, for the lactating Virgen Mary). For a series of image and commentary on this shrine, see: => Our Lady of La Leche.
