Comments: The Palacio de Gobierno (Government Palace) on the Plaza Mayor. The Catholic bishop's palace (Palacio del Arzobispo) and the national cathedral, which is devoted to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción (Our Lady of Assumption), are on another side of the Plaza Mayor, but not directly across from it. Since so many earthquakes has devastated Lima over the centuries, the Palacio de Gobierno was rebuilt in 1938 with a grandiose French baroque (or rococco) style reminiscent of the eighteenth-century Spanish colonial style: ornamentation surrounding the modified gothic windows, and neoclassical touches (elegance, harmony).
Humanities topic: Compare and contrast this capitol with those in Guatemala City, Mexico City, Montevideo, and Havana.
