Comments: The architectural style of the Capitolio (Capitol, in English) is a combination of Neo-Classicism (from the 18th century) and Art Deco (early twentieth century). It was inaugurated in 1929 by Gen. Gerardo Machado (a presidential dictator). From 1929 to 1959, this building was indeed the Capitol of Cuba, but now it houses the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment. As you can see, the architecture generally imitates the U.S. Capitol building, but Cuba's is taller. To the right of the Capitolio is the Gran Teatro de La Habana.
Humanities topics: (A) Write a short paragraph on why you think Cuban authorities and humanists (architects Raúl Otero and Eugenio Raynieri) would want to more or less imitate and exceed the American Capitol in Washington, D.C. (B) Compare and contrast this capitol with those in Guatemala City, Mexico City, Montevideo, and Lima.
