Comments: This convent was begun in 1536, and construction was completed in 1560. Augustinian monks arrived from Spain, and they were given this site at a small Aztec village of Acolman where they could build their convent, the principal objective of which was the evangelization of the local native population. The site was severely flooded several time during the 18th century because the monks built it below the level of the surrounding land. After the last flood made it uninhabitable it was abandonded and it fell into virtual ruins until it was restored in the 20th century.
