Havana (5)

Comments: The flag of Cuba stands alongside the José Martí tower in the power center of Havana. The giant monument was begun in 1953, the anniversary of José Martí's birth in Havana. (See his birth house in: => Havana #21.) The flag was officially adopted in 1902, when the United States gave Cuba its full independence. Originally this flag was first used in 1848 at the start of the independence movement against Spain. Interestingly, of course, this same flag is used by both the current regime in Cuba and by Cubans in the diaspora in the United States (see: => Calle Ocho #2.)
Humanities topic: Comment on the collocation (or juxtaposition) of the Cuban national flag at the site of the José Martí Memorial.
