Machu Picchu (17)

Comment: Earlier (<= Machu Picchu #9) we looked out over the central plaza toward the craftsmen's neighborhood. Turning around, in the center of the high place where we were standing then, we see this sacred monolith (a single standing stone). This is the center of the area dedicated to the worship of the Sun (Inti); it is the main temple. Compare and contrast this "temple" with those of the Mayas (<= Maya Index) and the Aztecs (<= Aztec Index). The Inca religion was, apparently, a combination of sun worship, nature worship, fetishism, animistic beliefs, and magical ceremonies. The principal Inca god was the Sun, Inti, the imperial god. The Inca built temples to Inti throughout their entire empire.
