Machu Picchu (8)

Comments: Here you see the Plaza Mayor (central square) of Machu Picchu. It occupies the lowest level of the site. Much of what we know about Machu Picchu is due to intelligent speculation because this city was abandoned before the Spaniards arrived, and there is no known oral knowledge about it. Two ideas dominate about the use of this flat, open space: it was used for games and/or it was used for ceremonies and processions. Apparently, Machu Picchu was a retreat for the Inca (emperor) himself.
