Comments:The professor-photographer-adventurer took this photograph from a stone lookout building that you will see in Machu Picchu #11. Below you see the main part of the archeological site in the center, and in the background you see the peak called Huayna Picchu. This fortress or bastion city of Machu Picchu is located at an elevation of about 8,000 feet, and it is 45 miles NW of Cuzco. It is often called the "Lost City of the Incas" because it was never found by Spanish conquistadors, and, over the centuries the high mountain flora grew over it. It is now a UN World Heritage Site. In 2007 Machu Picchu was designated as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, three of which are in Latin America: Machu Picchu, Chichén Itzá, and Christ the Redeemer statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro. Machu Picchu is composed of 140 temples, sanctuaries, parks, and houses, all of which had thatched roofs.
