Image: This is the banner under which Fr. Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, made the famous Grito de Dolores, his cry for beginning the Mexican War of Independence on September 16, 1810, against Spain. The banner depicts the Virgen de Guadalupe in the center; in the circle at the upper right is Fr. Hidalgo in front of his church in Dolores, Mexico; the the circle at the upper left is a crest of Spain, with its famous symbols of Castilla (castle) and León (lion). The large words say Viva Nuestra Reina Señora de Guadalupe. In other words, this banner led Fr. Hidalgo's rebels in their fight. Miguel Hidalgo was captured by Spanish forces in 1811 and executed.
