Image: Here is the museum's copy of an 1865 painting of Miguel Hidalgo (1753 - 1811) by Joaquín Ramírez (1834 - 1866).
Comments: At the height of the rebellion led by Fr. Hidalgo, he had gathered 80,000 fighters, whose weapons basically consisted of stones, machetes, poles, and a few shotguns. He established Mexico's first free government and his very first act was to outlaw slavery.
