Image: Original 1812 painting of Fr. José María Morelos (1765 - 1815) by José Zebero de la Luz Casco.
Comments: Following Miguel Hidalgo's execution in 1811, José María Teclos Morelos Pérez y Pavón (1765 - 1815), a Roman Catholic priest, took over leadership of the War of Independence from 1811 until his own capture and execution by the Spanish army in 1815. When he was captured, he was tried and found guilty of heresy by the Spanish Inquisition; the Catholic hierarchy then defrocked him so that he could be turned over to the civilian authorities for execution. In addition to re-organizing the independence army, Morelos led the Congress of Anáhuac, which officially declared independence from Spain in 1813. In 1814, under his guidance Mexico's first constitution, called the Decreto Constitucional para la Libertad de la América Mexicana, instituted Mexico as a Republic.
Humanities Topic: Despite immense differences--or even because of immense differences--compare and contrast this painting with the monumental statue in Cuernavaca; see: => Cuernavaca #9 and Cuernavaca #10. (Note: this painting is from 1812 whereas the giant statue is from the 1930s.
