Guatemala City (19)

Comments: Let's take one more look outside the Catedral de Santiago. In the right foreground you see a municipal security pickup. In recent years Guatemala has created a special policy unit for reduce crime in the major tourist areas. Now, what is possibly most notable about the cathedral are the twelve pillars which surround and protect (?) the cathedral? They are monuments to the thousands of victims--los desaparecidos (the disappeared) who were killed during the most recent civil war, which lasted 30 horrible years.
For two close-up views of these pillars, see: => Guate City #19a.
