Guatemala City (7)

Comments: With this colonnade we reach one side of the capital's centro histórico, the Parque Central. All distances in Guatemala are measured from the center of this town square (see the fountain in Guate City #13). Each of the sides of this square house the political (Palacio Nacional—#9), religious (cathedral—#19), commercial (this photo), and, as a slight remove, intellectual (National Library—#15) centers of Guatemalan power. In a main door just visible through the second set of columns on the right (see: => Guate City #7a), is the Portal de Comercio, which is a French-style commercial arcade or passage. In it is the world famous bar, El Portal. Notice the plain modern high rise commercial building behind this neo-classical colonnade.
