Avilés, Spain (9)

Comments: Here you see the park (parque del Muelle) in old historical center of the city, which is opposite the train tracks and the river off to the right of the photo. At the center is the monument and bronze statue representing Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. For close-up images of this statue, see: the following two embedded images:=> Menéndez close-up #1 and => Menéndez close-up #2. At the base of the pedestal there is a bronze inscription that says: "A PEDRO MENENDEZ DE AVILES / 1519-1574 / CABALLERO DEL HABITO DE SANTIAGO / CAPITAN GENERAL DEL MAR OCEANO / ADELANTADO Y CONQUISTADOR / DE LA FLORIDA / DONDE FUNDO LA CIUDAD DE SAN AGUSTIN / EN EL AÑO DE 1565. (The professor-photographer apologizes for failing to find the name and date of the sculptor/statue.)
Humanities question: Compare and contrast the approach taken by Avilés and St. Augustine, respectively, to way each city is featuring monuments to the same historical figure.
