Comments: In 1522, Hernán Cortés conquered a prosperous city called Cuauhnáhuac. In 1526 construction of this cathedral was begun, but, tellingly (for Cortés view of himself and the world) he did not endow the contruction. He spent part of his fortune, rather, on his palace.
