Buenos Aires (17)

Comments: The building in general mixes styles with a nave, which you see here, and a dome from the 18th century, a 19th century Neoclassical façade, which I have not shown you, and statues and a high altar that show Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Baroque elements. The nave is built in the shape of a Latin cross with a transept and three aisles and side chapels. The ceiling and walls are covered with frescoes, and the floor has Venetian-style mosaics.
Humanities question: From what you know about the Neoclassical period in Latin America, please comment on the fact that the Neoclassical façade was added to the building between 1826 and 1863. Isn't it peculiar that Argentina was actively constructing a major cathedral in the Neoclassical style in the 19th century? Or not. Comment please.
For perhaps the most important side chapel, see: => Buenos Aires #17a.
