Comments: Borges is one of the great Latin American—indeed, world—humanists of the 20th century. His influence in language, literature (short story, poetry, essay, translation, and literary criticism) is monumental. As you can see by his dates, his active career circumscribed the chronological center of the century. Roughly speaking, one can place him in the Latin American movement of vanguardismo. known In many ways he was the short story writer par excellence, and, at the same time he was the intellectual whose works opened the door for the great generation of prose writers throughout Latin America and the world who dominated the last half of the same century.
