Comments: Buenos Aires is the capital of Argentina, and it is one of the largest and most prominent cities in both Latin America and the world. The metropolitan population is about 15,000,000. The residents of the core city are called porteños because the city sits alongside the port. The metropolitan area residents are called bonairenses. The city was founded in 1536 by Pedro de Mendoza, and, like many cities in Spanish America, it was called with the long name of Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre (the city of our Lady Saint Mary of the Fair Wind). The original foundation was abandoned five years later, but the citys definitive foundation was made in 1580 by Juan de Garay when he sailed down river (the Paraná River) from Asunción, Paraguay. For a city park statue honoring this founder, see: => Buenos Aires #10.
