This series of images focuses on the old mountain resort city of Petrópolis, Brazil. The population (2016) is about 296,000. Later we will take a more extended virtual tour of Rio de Janeiro, the glorious pearl of Brazil. Near Rio, however, there is a lot of variety, from forested mountains to sun-drenched beaches. First, we will go to the mountain town of Petrópolis, which is located 40 miles from the giant metropolis on the coast. The reason why our Latin American humanities class is focusing on it is because of its importance to the history of Brazil. There is some geographical relationship between Rio de Janeiro, Petrópolis, and another place we are looking at in this course, Ouro Preto.
