Comments: The Jardín Borda was created by José de la Borda (18th century), who made his fortune in the silver mines in Taxco. A century later (1864-1866), the French emperor Maximilian of Hapsburg and his wife Carlota made their residence at this pleasant mansion. Maximilian was backed by the French army of Napoleon III of France. He was a liberal and rather humane ruler, but he was backed by powerful Mexican conservatives and the repressive French army. Mexican patriots and liberals fought against him. He was captured and executedin 1866. President Benito Juárez was restored to the presidency of Mexico. Juárez enacted major progressive reforms in an effort to modernize Mexico. Today, the Jardín Borda is a public park.
