Comments: One of the popular stories told about this place is that emperor Maximilian, who entertained his young native Mexican lover here. She was called La India Bonita (the pretty Indian). Their son was Maximilian's only known child. Incidentally, the English novelist Malcolm Lowry (1909-1957) used these gardens as a negative symbol in his famous novel (also a movie) Under the Volcano(1947)—which you will see in the next photo. The Oscar-winning movie (1984) is directed by John Huston and stars Albert Finney.
