Comments: Julio Herrera y Reissig (1875-1910) lived and died in the home (Spanish: piso) on the second floor (primer piso) in this building. The man in the foreground is not Herrera y Reissig. (Remember that the last name is NOT Reissig, but rather Herrera or Herrera y Reissig.) Julio Herrera y Reissig is one of the most important of all Latin American modernista poets. He belongs to the so-called Second Generation of modernistas. He came from a wealthy and politically connected upper middle class family, but he died young due to serious health problems (i.e., a congenital heart defect and typhoid fever). In his short career he published twelve works of poetry and other genres. He is famous for holding literary salons (veladas, tertulias) at the family penthouse nicknamed La Torre de los Panoramas. (Herrera y Reissig is possible the most significant humanities figure in this course on Latin American humanities.)
Humanities topic: Answer the questions in the attached document, which is a bilingual version of one of his most famous sonnets: => El despertar (Spanish and English versions).
