Comments: The Teatro Solís was created in 1840 and the edifice had its inaugural function in 1856. The Solis Theatre was built in 1856 in its first an only location on the Plaza de la Independencia. It was thoroughly remodelled in 1998-2004. In 1878, Uruguay's first national opera was premiered here in 1878: La Parisina by Tomás Giribaldi. On the history page on the offical Web site for the Teatro Solís says this about the importance of this theater for the classical performing arts (opera, ballet, theater):

Hace 120 años, el argentino Miguel Cané decía refiriéndose al Solís: "América del Sur no posee un solo teatro que pueda presentarse como rival y muchas grandes ciudades europeas lo desearían y lo mostrarían al viajero como una obra digna de examen". (One hundred twenty years ago, the Argentinian Miguel Cané said this about the Solís Theater: "South America does not have a single theater that can rival it, and many great European cities would like to have it as an attraction for tourists as a monument worth visiting.)

Humanities topic: Compare and contrast this grand theater with those in Havana, Buenos Aires, Mexico City, and Rio de Janeiro.
