Comments: Here you see the main façade of the Palacio Legislativo, where the Uruguayan congress (Asamblea General) is housed. The building was constructed between 1904 (President José Batlle y Ordóñez) and 1925 (President José Serrato); the latter year, for Uruguayans, marked the first centennial of their independence, which, as you can tell from Uruguay's chronology, is a rather complicated affair. The architects were Italians: Vittorio Meano and Gaetano Moretti.
Uruguay has two houses, the Chamber of Deputies (Cámara de Diputados, 99 members) and the Cámara de Senadores (31 members). All members serve five-year terms. In the 2009 congressional elections, here are the results by political party and the percent of the vote each received: Broad Front (47%); National Party (29%); Colorado Party (17%); Independent Party (2%).
Humanities topics: Topic 1: compare and contrast the architecture of this building with similar buildings on any three other countries including at least one other one from Latin America. Topic 2: Speculate on why Uruguay chose Italian architects to design this important national building as opposed to, say, French or USA architects.
