Le Québec (31)

Comment: This photo was taken from a promenade on the south side of the Château Frontenac (hotel). We're looking across the Saint-Laurent toward the city of Lévis, which was founded by François-Gaston de Lévis, second marquis de Montcalm and a hero of the battle of Sainte-Foy (1759) against the English. In the center of Lévis we see the tower of the Notre-Dame-de-la-Victoire Catholic church (1851), whose architect was Thomas Baillairgé. The Saint-Laurent River here is quite narrow; hence, it was of strategic importance when the French were struggling to maintain control of Canada from the English periodically throughout history of the region.
