Comments: We have come straight into the city's core at a corner of the Plaza Mayor (central square), where we find the post office. Here you get some idea of the Spanish concept of urban design: a central square with a grid of rectangular streets leading from its four corners. This plaza is just off to the side of the main Plaza Mayor, which is to the right, and which we shall see next. Pizarro himself designed a grid of 117 city blocks (9 streets by 13). The buildings see here, and, indeed, most of the historical core of Lima was rebuilt after a powerful earthquake destroyed the city in 1746. Perú lies along the earthquake zone that rims the entire Pacific Ocean.
