Critics comment that in her last years, when she was controlling her intense pain and immobility with a number of drugs. The critics have reported that her friends saw her painting decline while attempting to put on a brave exterior of happiness along with her dedication to her art. Note that the array of fruit is typically Mexican and the parrot, also Mexican, is a frequent image in Kahlo's paintings.
