Frida Kahlo (12)

Source: WTL research files.
Painting: Self-portrait "La columna rota" (The Broken Backbone), 1944.
Comments: With increasing health problems, Frida Kahlo was forced to wear an orthopedic iron corset. In this self-portrait we see images a Greek Ionian column where her spine would be (seen from the front), flathead nails in her body, leather straps holding up the column, a wind-swept cloth skirt, and a parched and broken desert landscape in the background.
Humanities Question: When the images are fused, what visual metaphor is being created?
