Painting: "Autorretrato como Tehuana o Diego en mi pensamiento o Pensando en Diego" (Self-Portrait as a Tehuana or Diego in my thoughts or Thinking About Diego), 1943.
Comments: In 1940, Frida Kahlo went to San Francisco to get treatment from Dr. Eloessere, and, at the end of the year she and Diego were remarried. The following year, her father died. In 1942, she begins writing her diary. In 1943, she gets a teaching position at the La Esmeralda art school in Mexico City, but she gives her classes at home in Coyoacán due to her poor health.
Cultural Note: Tehuana is a traditional region in southeast Mexico known for its matriarchal customs and the dominance of women. Here is a photo from 1940 of Frida in a Tehuana dress in a shop featuring Mexican handicrafts:

Humanities Questions: (A) What does it mean to paint Diego Rivera on her forehead? (B) What do the thin roots emanating from the flowers on her headdress suggest? (Hint: do they suggest a design element in the most iconic image in Mexican religion and culture?)
