Diego Rivera (16a)

Comments: Diego Rivera's murals are on the staircase and the second floor walls behind the photographer. In the colonial period this was the Viceroy's residence; hence, it was called the Palacio Real or the Palacio de los Virreyes. Before the Spanish conquest (dates? name of city?), the Aztec emperor's residence was built precisely on this site. The original building was in the style of a medieval fortress (see: <= the Palacio de Cortés in Cuernavaca). Thereafter, reconstruction in the 17th century created a neocolonial look. The third floor was added during remodelling in the early 20th century. The statue in the central fountain is Pegassus.
