Comments:In this old photo I focussed on the plant nearest me while leaving the pyramid altogether out of focus. The point of the photo was to "ground" myself, the professor-observer-photographer within his solid Western humanistic culture; that is, on what was familiar to me (i.e., a normal sort of tropical plant's leaves) while filtering the amazing (admiratio) sight I was experiencing in the background, which held no little cognitive dissonance for me. How precisely does anyone approach such novelty, uniqueness, foreignness, "otherness"? This pyramid was a serious challenge to me personally, culturally, psychologically, rationally.
Humanities Questions: What is your perception of this Mayan reality? Does this photograph communicate what I intuitively intended? (I mean, at the time I took the photo I "intended to communicate nothing at all". I couldn't. I was too shocked and challenged and overwhelmed and impressed...)
