Uxmal (2)

Notes: This is the sign that was at the entrance to the Uxmal Mayan archeological site (ruins) several years ago. In the background you see some of the ruins. Uxmal seems to have been founded by Ah Zuitok Tutul Xiu (1007 - ?) some time during the middle of the eleventh century of the Common Era (C.E.). This ruler-founder also definitively introduced the Mayan language to this site. The Mayan word "uxmal" seems to suggest "built three times". The Chilam Balam book says that Uxmal was founded between 987 and 1007. Some of the architecture, however, dates to 700. After 1200 Mayan power shifted to Mayapán, and Uxmal ceased to be a productive and thriving site.
