Mérida (4)

Notes: The façade is mostly late Spanish Renaissance (rounded arches, square windows), which means that it is pretty sober (elegant, harmonious, sparingly decorated). However, the towers are Spanish Moorish; some of the foundation and columns are based on Mayan construction; and the interior is dominated by seventeenth-century Baroque art. Furthermore, this cathedral was built as a fortress cathedral (see: => next page). The cathedral is dedicated to San Idlefonso, patron saint of Toledo, Spain.
