Comment: There is a mystery buried in this photograph. When the photographer-professor was leaving the Caracol (he was deeply impressed and moved during the visit), he noticed a quetzal bird (sacred bird of the Mayas on the ground just outside the portal you see here. He spent a long time waiting very quietly and motionlessly to see if he could snap a photo of this gorgeous bird, the name of which forms the first part of the god Quetzalcóatl's name. The bird stepped just inside the shadow of the doorway on the right. The photographer snapped the photo, but the bird is invisible due to the deep shadow. Mystery! An elusive Mayan god?
Question: What do you think of this story now that you've experienced the sacred site of the Mayas virtually?
