Comments: The Maya word chi means mouth; chen means pit or well; itzá is the name of the Mayan tribe that inhabited this site and that originated near Lake Petén Itzá in Guatemala: => See the textbook virtual tour of Lake Petén Itzá.) Hence, Chichén Itzá means "mouth of the Itzás' pit or well." At the end of this virtual tour of Chichén Itzá we will see the famous sacred well, called a cenote sagrado in Spanish.
