Comments: In a niche on the Cathedral's north wall, we find this bronze statue of San Fernando Rey de España (Saint Fernando, King of Spain). The statue represents king Fernando III of Castilla (1201-1252). He was canonized as a saint by Pope Clement X in 1671. Fernando III is most renowned as the Spanish king who conquered Córdoba (1236) and Sevilla (1248) from the Muslim Andalusians. In 1252 he was preparing to invade North Africa.
Humanities questions: Most likely what is the earliest date this statue could have been created? What humanities period was it created in? Why would a Guatemalan cathedral feature a statue of this saint?
