Guatemala City (18)

Source: WTL© digital photograph (2008) taken facing east from the Parque Central and looking at the Catederal de Santiago de Guatemala.
Comments: The façade of this impressive cathedral dates from the Baroque and Neoclassical periods. However, the full cathedral was completed and finished after the 1868 earthquake.
For a tour inside the cathedral, see: => Guate City #18a.
Humanities questions: What does the fact this this cathedral is dedicated to Santiago communicate to your about Latin America in general and Guatemala in particular? What practical benefit does this solid and rather squat architecture serve?
