Comments: On the far left, in an authentic period uniform is the city's official "enactor" of Pedro Menéndez de Avilés. Next to him are St. Augustine's mayor Nancy Shaver. In the center are the king and queen. The other two men are unidentified. Throughout the 450th anniversary reenactment of the founding of St. Augustine the Pedro de Menéndez enactor played his role with total seriousness. In fact, he saluted the king and led the crowd in chants of "Viva el rey" and "Viva España" to which the crowd responded rather enthusiastically. The professor-photographer was puzzled that a fiction (actor) anachrononistically broke the fiction-reality-chronology frame by interacting together with the very real and, in his own country and on the world "stage," the powerful king of Spain, who is Spain's official--not just nominal--head of state.
Humanities Question: What do you think about the professor-photographer's personal reaction comment above?
