Calle Ocho (1)

Comments: This is major monument in the Cuban Memorial Plaza which runs along 13th Street (the divided street we see in this photo) and is perpendicular to Calle 8, which is at the photographer's back. It is in the geographical hub Little Havana. Here you see several memorial wreaths, an elegant black marble obelisk dedicated to the "martyrs of the assault brigade" in the failed April 17, 1961, invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs by Cuban exiles. At the top of the monument is a flame for the (Cuban) Unknown Soldier. Behind this monument are flags of Cuba and the United States, a bust of the Cuban national hero José Martí, a statue of the Virgin Mary, a map of the island of Cuba, and other smaller monuments commemorating the Cuban wars of independence against Spain in the 19th century. As you can see, this is a place deeply honored by the Cuban population of Miami.
Humanities question: Describe what is "Latin American in America" (i.e., the U.S.A.) about the content of this photograph.
