Fort Matanzas (6)

Image: This is the view of the fort as the small passenger ferryboat is approaching the fort's landing on Rattlesnake Island. In 1742, with the fort nearly completed, James Ogelthorpe, Governor of Georgia, arrived off the inlet with twelve ships. The Spanish soldiers fired their cannons--like the ones you see here--and drove Ogelthorpe's invading fleet away. After this skirmish in 1742, the fort never fired its guns again.
