Havana (25a)

Comment: This photo shows parishioners in the nave of the Catedral de San Cristóbal during a noon mass. Normally, the professor-photographer does not take photos during religious services of any faith; however, he was standing unobtrusively in the back of the congregation and no one near him showed the slightest signs of objecting. In part this is because the Cathedral is one of Havana's main tourist attractions. Among the people you see here are not a few tourists, but almost everyone was participating to one degree or another in the mass.
Humanities topic and question: (A) Please reflect briefly on the fact that what you see here are a lot of people at a Catholic mass in an officially communist country. (B) You could quickly search the Web for information about the status of the Catholic Church and other religions in Cuba from 1959 to the present.
