Havana (3)

Source: Photograph (2010) by WTL© on site in Havana, Cuba. This photo was shot from the Plaza de la Revolución (see: => Havana #5) in the Vedado district of Havana.
Comments: This building is the Minsiterio del Interior. The effigy is a wire sculpture showing an outline of the famous face of Che Guevara, which in turn is based on the photo of "El Che" taken by Alberto Korda in 1960. (See photo below of photographer and photographed). The words below the face say "Hasta la victoria siempre" (Always onward to victory), a phrase often used by Che Guevara. After Fidel Castro, Che Guevara, and others won the Revolution, Guevara was named Minister of the Interior, and he had an office in this building.

Korda, left; Guevara, right. "Guerrero heroico" by Alberto Korda, 1960. He took the photo with a Leica M2 camera with a 90 mm lens and Kodak Plus-X pan black and white film.

Korda (Alberto Díaz Gutiérrez, 1928-2001; b. Havana; d. Paris) was a fashion photography until the Cuban Revolution. Thereafter, he was the most prolific photographer of Fidel Castro and images of post-Revolutionary Cuba. He is buried in the Colón Cemetery in Havana (see the Necrópolis de Colón: => Havana #23).

Humanities topic: Analyze and evaluate the use of Korda's photograph as inspiration for the wire sculpture on the Interior Ministry.
